In 2024, four Portuguese wines were distinguished by the prestigious Wine Spectator magazine, entering the list of the 100 best in the world. This distinction highlights the diversity and quality of national wines, covering different styles and wine regions.

The first of the four highlighted wines, the Porto Dow’s Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) 2018, occupies the 26th position on the list. This Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) presents an elegant combination of freshness and intensity and is produced by the historic Dow’s, one of the most respected wine houses in Porto. Dow’s is owned by Symington Family Estates, a company founded in 1798, and responsible for several iconic estates in the Douro, maintaining a strong commitment to sustainable practices and innovation in winemaking.

The Anticiclone 2022, a red wine from the Setúbal region, ranks 66th. It is fresh, well-balanced, and medium-bodied. Produced by the renowned José Maria da Fonseca winery and established in 1834, this is one of Portugal’s oldest wine companies. The company, now managed by the seventh generation of the family, boasts a diverse portfolio ranging from the renowned Moscatéis de Setúbal to acclaimed red and white wines.

In 78th place is the Vale D. Maria Vinhas do Sabor 2020, a red wine from Douro Superior known for its captivating complexity. Produced by Quinta Vale D. Maria, and founded in the 1990s by Cristiano van Zeller, it quickly gained international acclaim. The winery farm’s philosophy focuses on valuing old vines and authentically expressing the Douro terroir.

Finally, in 81st position, comes the Soalheiro Alvarinho 2021, which stands out for its vibrant acidity and unmistakable freshness. Produced by Quinta de Soalheiro, located in Melgaço and founded in 1974 by João António Cerdeira, this winery pioneered the cultivation of the Alvarinho grape variety in the Monção and Melgaço sub-region.
