Carnival in Portugal is celebrated with intensity, colour, music, satire and tradition and although the entire country gets into the spirit of partying, some cities stand out with their grand parties and lively parades.

One of these cities is Ovar, which holds one of the most popular carnivals in the country: Spectacular parades, samba schools, costume groups and lots of music, attract thousands of visitors to it every year.

Another famous one is The Torres Vedras Carnival, which is considered the most traditional and authentic in Portugal. Famous for its “matrafonas” (men dressed as women), the event stands out for its popular and critical character and has more than 100 years of history.

Loulé, one of the oldest and most lively carnivals in southern Portugal, is known for its parades featuring samba and political satire. The region’s mild climate and festive atmosphere make Loulé an ideal destination for those who want to combine beach and partying.

In Funchal, carnival is an explosion of joy, heavily influenced by the Brazilian style. There are two main parades there, one with exuberant costumes and dance groups, while the other is an irreverent and humorous parade.

The Mealhada Carnival, taking place in the city of Mealhada, is also famous for its strong Brazilian influence, with emphasis on local samba schools and a street spirit that infects both residents and visitors.

Finally, in Podence, which is located in the Northeastern part of the Trás-os-Montes Province, takes place the most traditional and enigmatic Carnival in Portugal: the Carnaval dos Caretos. Recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, this celebration is marked by pagan rituals that date back to pre-Christian times. The Caretos, masked figures wearing colourful fringed costumes, rattles tied around their waists and tin or wooden masks, run through the streets in a kind of “devil’s race”, jumping, shouting and shaking in rituals associated with fertility and renewal.

Carnival in Portugal holds celebrations rich in tradition, creativity and fun, offering unique experiences that mix satire, partying and popular culture.
