The Dia da Defesa Nacional – DDN (National Defence Day), promoted by the Portuguese Ministry of National Defence, is an initiative intended to raise awareness among young people about the importance of defending the country and the role of the Armed Forces in preserving national sovereignty. Held annually, the DDN is mandatory for all Portuguese citizens aged 18 and was created in 2004, with the end of the Compulsory Military Service. Unjustified absence may result in legal penalties, like the application of a fine (that can reach 1247€) or the prohibition from exercising public functions, which in practice means that you will not be able to apply for public offices or join the Armed Forces and National Security Forces.
The main objective of the DDN is to promote active citizenship, encouraging knowledge about the national defence system and civic involvement. During the day, participants have the opportunity to learn about the missions and functions of the three branches of the Armed Forces (Army, Navy and Air Force), as well as explore career possibilities and military training. Activities include information sessions, presentations of military equipment and vehicles, as well as practical demonstrations of operations carried out by the military. These moments bring young people closer to the Armed Forces, highlighting their importance in protecting the territory, responding to emergencies and participating in international peacekeeping missions.
National Defence Day is a unique opportunity for young people to understand their duties and rights related to the defence of the homeland, reinforcing the role of each citizen in the collective security of the nation. The initiative contributes to greater civic awareness and to strengthening the connection between society and the Armed Forces.
